House hunting

So I'm looking for a house. It's not fun. It's almost as bad as dating, almost. There's been one that I really like, and they signed a contract as I saw it. For what I look at...

1) it disappears. Some stuff moves fast.

2) it's outside of my price range, and it won't work down.

3) it's too close. A country boy like me doesn't want to live on top of someone.

4) it's too far. If I live an hour away, I'll spend my whole life in the car and never see the place. Plus, I'd never get people there for a life group.

5) it's too small. Some houses are smaller than my one bedroom apartment, but to add more bedrooms, they basically remove the living room from the equation. Again, if I'm going to have a life group, I need a living room large enough to host one.

So there's a lot out there I don't want. Man I hate house hunting.

Backpacking

I love the great outdoors. Indoors has comfort. Outdoors had adventure, challenge, freedom, and fresh air. Indoors has TV shows about nature. Outdoors had the full beauty of creation. Indoors has the internet. Outdoors has real life.

Yeah. I wish I had time to be outdoors.

I wish a had a place to be outdoors.

I'm househunting right now. I wish I had property. You know, a place with grass and trees. A place that I could just spend the night outside without having to locate a partner and go somewhere. Maybe that's just a guy thing.

Don't get me wrong. I love backpacking trails with friends (or even foolishly alone). I've bought a bunch of gear just for that purpose. But then I'm limited by schedules and other stuff that means I just don't get to do it, even though buying the gear makes me feel optomistic. Well, as much as I get anyway.

Sigh.

I've got to get outside or I'm going to blow.

She turned me into a Newt!

Is it sad that I think of Monte Python every time I hear about Newt?

No, I'll tell you what's sad, his political strategy. His goal (virtually dashed with Santorum's withdraw) is to have a split convention. Even with Mitt Romney having a firm lead, his hope is that when it comes to the convention, Mitt will fall a few delegates short. Then, he hopes to steal these votes away to get the nomination.

Think about this. His goal is to take the vote OUT of the PEOPLE's hands. Is that really what we want, someone who wants to take away our decision to select the president? Not only that, this guy markets himself as a rebel, a party outsider. So his goal is to get the party leaders to turn on the people and select him. That's a real "outsider" to me.

Newt, not that I really liked you anyway, but you've totally lost my respect.

NGC Doomsday Preppers

National Geographic Channel has a show that I'm quickly becoming addicted to: Doomsday Preppers. For the most part, I can't help but think "You're nuts. You're going a little bit too far."

On the other hand, the other side of me says "You know, we really are dependant on Wal Mart." I'm not building a bunker or stockpiling ammo, but I did grab and extra thing of Romin so that if the power were to go out, I could still eat. Other than that, a lot of my camping stuff doubles as short-term preps, like say a snow storm that knocks out the power. That kind of stuff happens all the time, so some camping gear and some non-perishable food items could be good things to have on hand.

In the mean time, I'm going to watch a lady make her son do a detox shower in their year in winter because she's terrified of Asian bird flu. Rediculous, but addictive to watch.

Long One - A short post

This week has been a long one. Major project due at work, friend killed in an accident at his work. Yeah... There were a couple of news stories that I wanted to comment on, but just no time! So instead I will leave you with a quote from one of the greatest movies of all time.

"Let me explain... No! No! There is no time! Let me sum up."

Classic. Witty humor, touching tale.

Great, now I'm going to have to watch it this weekend.

(If you haven't figured out what it is, I'll give you some more.)

"I'm not left handed."

"Anybody want a peanut?"

"Inconceivable!"

"As you wish..."

"He's only mostly dead."

"You are the brute squad."

"Hello! My name is..." (You know the rest).

(If you still haven't figured it out, SHAME ON YOU. Now go buy the Princess Bride and watch it until you can quote all of it!)

Wrath of the Titans

I enjoyed Clash of the Titans, and went to see this sequel. Allow me to make a few points. First, don't see it if you haven't seen the first one. Mostly, because much of the character development is in the first film, specifically for the protagonist, Persius.

That being said, it had a decent plot and premise. I enjoyed it. The greek gods are weakened (as explained in the first film, the greek gods are fed by men's prayers, so when men stop praying, the gods weaken). Because of that, the Titans and other demonic creatures are escaping Taurtaurus (I have no idea how to spell it). Long story short, Zeus is captured, Posiden dies, and it is up to Persius to save mankind from Kronos, who looks really cool, by the way.

The movie is entertaining. I saw it in 2D (because I'm cheap), but the graphics were cool. If you're looking for a movie to see, it's worth it.

And now for some truth... on oil.

Obama and Biden have been LYING lately, for political purposes. "Oil drilling is at an all time high," but even their own graphs show the peak starting before he took office, based on permits issued by the Bush administration, and drilling on private land that does not require federal permits. They have not increased oil one drop.

"We need to end subsidies." They don't receive subsidies. Not one. Farmers get subsidies when food production is high, paying them not to produce. Oil companies? They get a corporate tax break. It's called a "manufacturer's credit." It's the same tax break GE, Ford, or any other manufacturer gets. What do they make? Gas.

"Ending the tax subsidies will help the poor." You mean the subsidies they don't get (see above)? No, it will help those that pay the bulk of the taxes, aka the richest 1 percent. In fact, it will hurt the poorest (as that lack of tax credit goes straight to the consumer's cost), because more of their welfare or Social Security checks will go toward paying for gas. And groceries (which are hauled by trucks, therefore their expenses go up). And it will further hurt places like the Gulf Coast, which in addition to losing most of thei jobs due to Obama policies, will also suffer from down tourism, as gas prices go so high less people will vacation, costing them tourist trade and further destroying their local enonomies.

"They made too much profit." They get a percentage of every dollar, so as prices go up, so do their profits. It's called economics. That percentage is standard, regulated by the government. For every dollar of gas, the local station gets less than a percent. The gas company gets a larger percent. The oil importers (like the Saudis) get their cut. But who get's the largest percentage? The Federal government. They put a high sales tax on gasoline. Really, really high. States also have their tax, but from every dollar, the Federal government gets the largest cut. Obama's solution to high gas prices? "Let's increase the size of our cut." He simply doesn't understand that the money has to come from somewhere, namely, the consumer.

I truly don't believe that Obama and Biden are maliciously deceitful (though I do believe Nancy Pelosi to be a generally malicious human being). I think they are that ignorant on how the real world works. That's why law professors and legislators make lousy presidents, from either party.
