NFL 12 week 16 abrev.ed

The Colts are going to the playoffs baby!  The game was messy, but we pulled it out.  Which is good, because I doubt we'll win next week, nor go any further in the playoffs.  We've gotten worse as we go along, especially in pass protection.

Rest of the League:
Pats-Jags.  The Patriots almost lost to one of the crappiest teams on their schedule (and that's saying something).  And do you know why?  Because Tom Brady is a chump.

Saints-Cowboys.  That was crap.  The Cowboys, who I don't even like, we cheated in OT.  Cheated badly, by a ref team either too stupid or too lazy to do their job.  That was not a catch.  That ball was moving all over the place.  He clearly did not have it in control at any point in time.  Yet they rule it a fumble, recovered again by the Saints down near the endzone for a chip shot.  Yet the rule is that the offense cannot advance the ball by a fumble, as evidenced that the Ravens could not vs the Giants in the next game.  It made no sense.  I'm not saying the Cowboys wouldn't have lost fair and square anyway, but they should have been given the chance.

That's all you get.  I've been spending time with my family and so should you.  Get off your computer!

Oh, and Merry Christmas.

Old fashioned way

"It's an old fashioned notion."
                                                            -Nick Fury, The Avengers
I'm an old fashioned sort of person.  Very old fashioned.  I'm an old-timer in a twenty-something body.  I don't text.  I don't have Internet at home or on my phone.  I've spent this Christmas vacation with my mother and my sister's family (my niece loves me).  As much as I've enjoyed the occasional game on my sister's iphone or the ease of the camera, I still have a phone that only makes phone calls, and not just because I'm cheap.

A perfect illustration is my flight out to my mother's house.  I was reading an excellent book that I would recommend to anyone interested in improving their church, Gary McIntosh's Taking Your Church to the Next Level.  I've so enjoyed the learning that comes from reading the book.  I've actually had to read the book slowly, to absorb the information.  I've also bled a highlighter dry reading its content.

The point being, I read a couple of chapters on the airplane.  The man in the same row as me pulled out his kindle, after the drinks were served.  He read a page or two when they said "We are now starting our descent.  Please switch off all of those electronic devices.  While I read on, that man sighed at the inconvenience.

This is but one small advantage of old fashioned ways.  Books also have a feel that you don't get on an e-reader.  Moreover, you don't get the smell of a new book, or even of an old musty one.  There is more than the simple absorbing of information.  It is the difference between a pic on instagram and actually being out in the woods.  It's the difference between an "lol" text and hearing the laughter of a loved one.  It's the difference between a "poke" handshake or a hug.

I guess another way to say it is that it is the difference between the electronic world or the real world.  Then again, it's an old fashioned notion.

Newtown Tragedy

How do you reconcile the innocents of Christmas with the horrifice nature of a madman walking into an elementary school and shooting children?  You can't.  A friend of mine put it well when seeking solutions.

"Bear with me. I'm trying to process a few things and have been sharing to help with that as well as hear others opinions. That being said I have a few thoughts on the Sandy Hook School Shooting. 1) controlling guns is not going to solve this issue. He was a crazed man who would have found a way regardless of laws. Yes we can make things harder for criminals, but if they want to do harm they are going to find a way.

"2) there are no right or wrong answers about how we can prevent this in the future. We simply have no answers as to why and only the killers have those answers. We can do our best to figure it out and hope it's enough to make a difference, but unless we start taking blinders off of our eyes and see that there are some people in this world that really are evil we can't change.

"3)we need to take an honest look at mental health in this country. We need to stop labeling those who do not need labels and HELPING those that need help. Parents need to stop pretending that children can never do wrong and see that they can. We need to learn the warning signs for potentially dangerous people and get them help. And we need to give law officials a chance to do the same.

"4) parents need to teach their children violence is NEVER a solution to their anger or fear. We need to teach them that anger and fear are healthy but that we need to address it appropriately and calmly."
She's right.  They didn't need guns in Oklahoma City.  They used common fertilizer.  People are shifting blame to guns.  To schools.  To video games.  (For the record, I won't play games like Call of Duty for this reason.  It's one thing to shoot aliens or zombies.  It's something else to go for realism that my friends have lived through.  There is something wrong about fantasizing about real deaths and tragedy.)

The bottom line is evil just exists in the world sometimes.  Like 9-11, OK City, Aurora, and Newtown.  People like Osama bin Laden, Timothy McVay, Joseph Stalin, and Adolph Hitler.  Part of me thinks we will never truly understand these people.  At least I won't.  You can't legislate morality.  This boy didn't have a legal issue or a self-esteem issue.  He was not right in the head, and for some reason, did an act of great evil.

The hope for this world isn't the law.  It isn't a political party.  It isn't video games, or lack thereof.  The only cure for evil is Jesus.

Then again, that's what Christmas is really about, isn't it?

Putting the X back in Christmas

A lot of people react out of ignorance to stupid things.  Like the unions' reaction to the right to work.

For example, saying "Happy Holidays" is a crime to some.  Saying "Merry Christmas" is a crime to others.  When I was a boy, "Happy Holidays" meant have a nice Christmas and New Years.  No big deal.  Now, it's the biggest deal in the world.  And saying Merry Christmas?  That's intolerant.  Of what?  Would you rather me walk around saying "I hope you have a miserable December 25th" to everyone that doesn't believe in Jesus?

The latest scandal is over "Merry X-mas," which has been a traditional way to say "Merry Christmas" for decades.  Now it's considered "taking the 'Christ' out of Christmas."

That's ignorant.  As someone who studied Greek when getting my B.A. degree at Johnson university, let me straighten people out who revolt over this.

The X is not an x.  It is a Greek letter that looks like an x.  It's actually the Greek letter for the 'Ch' (pronounched kee).  It is the first letter in the greek word Christ.

In other words, it's not taking the Christ out of Christmas.  It's going back to the origional languages.

So stop throwing a fit over nothing and have a Merry X-mas!

Right to Work?

There is a current story in the news that I find simply unbelievable. Michigan has become a right-to-work state. The home of the UAW is giving people a choice.

Now, President Obama said that this is “political.” Ironic that this is his complaint. The Campaigner-in-Chief still has no idea how to be a president, so all he’s done since winning, is campaign. Now he’s campaigning for the unions.

But once again, let’s step aside and look at the FACTS. Facts are this law does not make unions illegal. This gives people the choice to be a part of the union or not. How things have worked in the past is that unions formed to protest unsafe working conditions (though they have outlived that purpose). The problem is once a business unionized, they were unionized forever. You didn’t get to vote whether to have a union. You didn’t get a choice whether to be in the union. You were in the union period.

Here’s where the next level of history comes in. When Prohibition ended, the Chicago mafia needed a new area to maintain their lives. They bought Vegas. But once honest people took back Vegas, the mob took over--you guessed it--the unions. And as the mobsters have a habit of doing, they got in bed with politicians, paying for campaigns and organizing for politicians that they had in their pockets (Gee, what politician do we know with Chicago connections?).

If you don’t see the mafia connection, look to how they behaved yesterday as the bill was signed. Union reps rioted, violently. One punched out a reporter.  It's the same mafia strong-arm tactics that they always run (watch the movie "The Untouchables" sometime).

So what’s this all about? This is about freedom to choose. (wait, I though the DEMS were pro-choice? Nope.) Why are union reps so against choice? Because people will choose not to participate, and that less money in THEIR pockets.

The president said that this is “the right to work for less.” He’s right. Less union dues, less oversight, less bribery, less corruption. How can people get less, if they get to take home their money instead of passing it on to full time thugs?  Then again, since when do thugs worry about freedom.

Dear Mr. Costas

Dear Mr. Costas,

Where were you this week Bob?  Where was your halftime rant?  Another week, another NFL player dead.  Why weren't you on TV proclaiming the evils of the car culture?  Last week, you talked about Dirty Harry.  Where were you criticizing Pixar's Cars?

Oh, that's right.  This week didn't fit your political agenda.  You hypocrite!  Last week, a player got drunk, cheated on his girlfriend, came home, shot her, then shot him.  This week, another player got drunk, got behind a wheel, caused a wreck, and killed his friend and teammate.  But that narrative doesn't fit your politics.  It does fit the truth.

Here's an idea.  Next time instead of running your mouth, look at actually facts.  Why don't you go after Budweiser instead of Smith and Wesson?

But then again, I'm sorry.  I guess it's asking too much for someone on TV to give a crap about truth.

NFL 12 week 14 synopsis

Let’s just start with the end of the first half. Our O-line has struggled all season, but down 10-7, they seemed to enjoy letting TN through to luck (I actually had to go get my hat so I could throw it). That’s how it came to pass that when Luck was taking a fumble, he tried to throw the ball, which was intercepted and run back for a touchdown. The only problem was HIS KNEES WERE DOWN. BOTH of them actually. They reviewed it and still called it a Titans TD. But his knees were down. It was a bad call by a bad ref team.

Also in there, Carter fumbled. That’s no big surprise. ALL Carter does is fumble. So how come we cut all our good players but somehow managed to keep the fumble king? CUT HIM.

I don’t want to take anything away from the Titans D, but our line sucked and has sucked pretty well all season. That’s why Luck has thrown so many passes on the run, and why we struggled to run. We’ve got to come up some solutions up front (like maybe bringing Jeff Saturday back).

The second half started with a touchdown, forced a 3 and out, then one of the best punts I’ve ever seen (like out of a Madden game), resulting in an INT for a TD, and the Colts lead. I think this proves that the Colts do better when we have to come back after the half.

Then this inept ref team continued their stupidity, on both teams. They wouldn’t call pass interference at all on this drive, then extend the next by calling it for no reason. At least lean one way or the other. Don’t leave both teams scratching their heads trying to figure out what you want.

This turned into a good game despite the refs with a couple of lead changes, but I do have say Avery had a chance for a big TD, but dropped the ball, and again, he’s done a lot of that this season. Luckily, our defense made up for it and came up with a turnover with five and a half to go in the fourth.

Rest of the League:
Redskins-Ravens. One heck of a game. Both teams played with a lot of heart, but the Redskins had just a little more to lose, and therefore had a greater desire to win.

Panthers-Falcons. Hotlanta sure has cooled off. Cam Newton has warmed up. I’ll tell you, it seems like the Falcons have ruined their best chances for a conference championship this year, if they can’t get their momentum back.

Chargers-Steelers. Bring back Charlie Batch! If you lose to a San Diego team that is that bad…

Cowboys-Bengals. I can’t explain why Cincy was that bad this week. Maybe the Cowboys just needed after one of their players got drunk and killed another player (more on this later).

Browns-Chiefs. Why mention this? Browns were the only team in the AFC North to win this week.

Broncos-Raiders. Peyton Manning. Yeah.

Vikings-Bears. Anyone surprised that Cutler got hurt? You shouldn’t. Maybe the Bears should discover the concept of the offensive line.

Giants-Saints. I bELIeve in Eli! The Saints still struggle. They can put up big plays and are as dangerous as anybody, but all they can do is big plays, but still struggle finding identity. The Giants Defense did not struggle, and still play like beasts. That offense wasn’t bad either. Too bad its about a week too late.

Seahawks-Cards. Can you say “blowout”? Dang… I think that Packers game gave the Hawks a chip on their shoulder, and they’ve never quite recovered.

NFL 12 week 13 response

Well, if you're a regular follower of this blog, you'll notice a suspicious lack of a week 13 synopsis.  There is a good reason for that.  I didn't get to watch one single football game this week.  At all.

Yet, football has been the word in the news.  No, not because the Colts barely kept down the Lions.  Not because RGIII managed up upset Eli.

No, because of Bob Costas.

There is a saying that the news person should never be the story.  Like a debate moderator interjecting incorrect information in order to help their candidate, for example.

In this case, there was a tragedy as the linebacker for the KC Cheifs murdered his girlfriend, then shot himself.  This is a terrible tragedy.  That is enough said.

But never let the truth get in the way of a political agenda.  No, Costas goes on air and declares that the problem is guns.  That's right.  It's all the gun's fault.

Really?  What about the nanny that stabbed the three kids she was watching, then herself?  We should outlaw kitchen knives.  And nannies.  And kids.  And while we're at it, kitchens!  What about the guy that was beaten to death as a part of a gang initiation.  We should outlaw kicking?  Shoes?

Do you see why this logic falls apart?  Cities that have stringent Gun Control laws have MORE violence.  Look at Chicago!  Their crime rate increases annually.  Because gun laws only take them away from citizens who now can't defend themselves.  Here's another stat, in 90% of cases where a gun is used to prevent a crime, the gun is not fired.

And this linebacker?  He was wealthy and had no record.  So no gun laws would have prevented him from getting one.

Let me tell you straight up that I do not own a firearm.  But unlike most people who react emotionally to this issue, I studied FACTS (something Costas should try sometime).  The bottom line is simple math.  More gun=less gun crime.  Why?  Because criminals, by definition, do not obey the law.  In one city (as I recall, Atlanta GA, but I was unable to find the study again) they banned guns, and armed robbery skyrocketted.  So much so that they repealed the law.  When the did, restaurant owners posted signs saying "15% off if you carry a gun."  Crime hit new lows.  Why?  You're not going to stick up a place if you think everyone in there has a gun.

Now you're thinking Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction, right?  "I'm trying real hard to be the shepherd..."

Anyway, I did some independant research and made an informed decision as to where I stand.  Maybe Bob Costas should do the same...

NFL 12 Week 12 synopsis

Between Thanksgiving and a funeral, I didn't see much in the way of football, so this will be abreved.

Colts-Bills.  BORING.  Every point scored in the first half by either team was on Special Teams.  The second half wasn't much better.  And the cheerleaders who shaved their heads, that's just kinda creepy.

Texans-Lions.  Also boring.  Very boring.  In my household, we were yelling at both teams.  Houston did not deserve to win.  The teams almost tied, and certainly should have.

Redskins-Cowboys.  A special shout out to by brother-in-law, a Cowboys fan.  All I can say is I TOLD YOU SO.

Browns-Steelers.  HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA.

Oh, and Tom Brady is still a chump.

NFL 12 week 11 synopsis

I have to ask, what is the point of paying DirecTV for NFL Sunday Ticket if they pre-empt the first quarter of the game you want to watch? Grrrr.

When the game started here, the Colts led 14-7 (oh sure, they cover when the Pats do well, but not us).

But let’s face it… Colts don’t win in Foxborough. Being up by a TD and them missing a Field Goal, that’s a good way to start. Then the Colts got a three and out, which the Pats ran back for a TD. Then Luck threw a Pick-6. And that was the game.

As far as the fumble just after the two minute warning, Chump fans can boo, but you don’t get to rip the ball out after the signal is made and then say you win.

I must also say, for 58 yarder, Vinetari was darn close trying to move it closer in the first half (not that it mattered in the second half).

We’ve got to fix whatever is wrong with our O-Line and we HAVE to get Reggie Wayne some consistent help out there. The Pats were in the backfield all day. It wasn’t the Chump that won this game. It was the overwhelming Pats defense.

One last point, up by almost 30 points with a few minutes left on the clock, why don’t the Pats pull there starters? Because they are the most unsportsman-like team in the NFL.

Rest of the League:
This was a crazy week. Lots of OT and other shenanigans.

Cowboys-Browns. Ok, this is the one normal thing the happened. The Browns lose a crushingly close one. They had this one won, until the fourth quarter, when they found a way to lose.

Texans-Jags. You can tell the Jags were on the road, because they actually played well. They too had a double-digit lead, but then the Texans got hungry. And when they hungry, they win.

Buccs-Panthers. Panthers also had a double digit lead, and also lost in OT. Crazy right? Oh, and Dallas Clark is still the man. Colts should have kept him to get Reggie Wayne some help out there.

Redskins-Eagles. This was the Redskins people have been waiting on all season. At least they trounced the Eagles, right?

Bengals-Chiefs. Ok, two normal ones.

Falcons-Cards. Arizona also got to an early lead and held it, but like the Texans, good teams find ways to win (even with 6 turnovers).

Packers-Lions. Detroit also almost took it to the Packers. They were neck and neck, but GB pulled it out.

Saints-Raider. Have the Saints finally found their identity? This is how you start a run for the playoffs…

Broncos-Chargers. Yeah. In case you were wondering, he’s still Peyton Manning.

NFL 12 week 10 synopsis

Just in case you missed it, the Colts had a short week this week. You kinda figured that in this rematch with a division rival, we were going to struggle on defense. Robert Mathis was out, as were our Corners Davis and Powers. Plus, we haven’t been the best on the road. We should beat the Jags, but we couldn’t beat them earlier this year at home.

That being said, the Jags identity as a team revolves around Pocket Hercules (Jones-Drew), and with him out, they really struggle to get going on offense with a punt, a missed Field Goal, and a fumble to start the game.

Andrew Luck on the other hand, looked nearly unstoppable. He was running and throwing nearly at will. I don’t understand why the Jags are the only team who are WORSE at home than they are on the road. It makes no sense.

I also love the fact that it seems like every time Luck makes an INT, he makes a point to go out and get the tackle himself. He takes responsibility for the mistake and does his personal best to make up for it.

Last time these two team played, the Colts built a big first half lead, then took their foot off the gas and were outscored 19-3 in the second half for a loss. The field reporter for NFL Network asked the Colts what they were going to do in the second half, and he said “We’re going to step on the Jaguar’s throat.” His team started that mandate with a pick-6. Henne tried to breathe some life into the Jags, but they also had a season high number of penalties. The Colt’s closed out by almost getting another pick-6.

Rest of the League:
Saints-Falcons. Wow. What a way for a streak to end. The Saints have been pretty terrible this season, but they got it done against an undefeated rival.

Bengals-Giants. This wasn’t the income I expected. Usually the Giants are only this bad playing in their division. Cincy seemed to come awake, while the Giants slept through it, especially on defense.

Broncos-Panthers. Cam scored first, and it looked like it would be a game, but Peyton Manning is still Peyton Manning and the Broncos defense just had Carolina’s number all day long.

Pats-Bills. This game looked over early, but to the credit of the Bills they fought back hard against Tom Brady (who is a chump) and Bill Belichump.

Ravens-Raiders. This was a route, plain and simple.

Titans-Dolphins. So was this, and it makes little sense as bad as the Titans have been this season.

Cowboys-Eagles.  Boo.  I was hoping they would tie, so that way both teams would lose.

Rams-Niners.  So I was off by one game...

Texans-Bears.  I'm telling you, if they stay hungry, Houston can do very well this season.  This time, their defense was hungry for Cutler.  And turnovers.  On both sides of the ball.  It was messy, but it's still a W.

Maybe Preppers Aren't So Crazy...

So I mentioned before that NatGeo's show Doomsday Preppers entertains me, because they find crazy people who make ridiculous preparations for the Zombie Apocalypse (metaphorically speaking), like a family of hippies that like in an old missile silo.  Or the lady that so fears Asian Bird flu, she filters her own water and makes her family take detox showers before they enter the house.

These people are nuts.  Hilariously so.  But just like anything else, they find the extremes for entertainment value.  But not all who call themselves "preppers" are nuts.  FEMA and the CDC both have advisements for what people should have. (I would avoid looking at the CDCs.  They're a little nuts too.)

I live in an area that was hit by Hurricane Sandy.  I had a little leak in the roof, but not bad.  Others lost power, but all in all our area was largely unscathed.  New York and New Jersey... FEMA is having trouble getting people food, water, and gas, just like they did in Katrina.  So maybe it's not so nuts to have a few extra gallons of water.  Maybe it's not so crazy to have a few gas cans sitting around.  Maybe it's not too insane to have some packets of Romin that only require boiling water and sat good forever.

Sandy's don't happen every day.  I get that, so preparing for that is an "everyone once in a while" thing just like everyone else.  But snowstorms are common enough, so saving up for a generator isn't the worst option in the world.  Just think about it.

One more thing, if part of your prepping is ammo or a gas mask, you've crossed the line to nutty, just for the record.

NFL 12 week 9 synopsis

I was looking forward to this game, because I thought Miami and Indy are fairly evenly matched. That’s not true. Miami has a running game. How many times do I have to say it? Reggie Wayne and Andrew Luck need some help out there.

We had some chances to take the lead back in the first half. Vinetari missed a FG (because Mr. Clutch doesn’t give a crap if the game ain’t on the line), and Miami blocked another. Then to close out the half, Luck kept putting the ball on receivers’ hands, and they dropped them. That sucked.

It was nice to have Robert Mathis back, even if he got hurt immediately. Our defense just plays different with Freeney and Mathis up from knocking the snot out of people.

In the end, it was a tough, close, exciting game. Luck broke the rookie throwing record, and the Colts got a hard-fought W.

Rest of the League:
Bears-Titans. That’s just ugly. Chicago looked good, you know, except for their offense. Tennessee, well, looked like Chicago has much of this season. They got a safety, and threw some Interceptions. Good times.

Panthers-Redskins. Cam Newton vs. RGIII. I’m a little disappointed that it wasn’t more of a game than this.

Texans-Bills. If the Texans stay hungry, they can’t be beat. And they weren’t even that hungry in this one. Maybe they ate too much Halloween candy. Tom Brady went as the same thing he did last year, a Chump.

Ravens-Browns. I was amazed how well the Browns did in this game. It stayed close until the very end, surprisingly.

Steelers-Giants. Ok, that second Giant’s TD in the first half WAS a TD. The ball was already moving before his arm came forward. Just because he pushed it forward does not mean that it wasn’t a fumble. Moving on, this was a great game. These teams are both traditional kick-you-in-the-teeth powerhouses. Giants have a little better offense. Steelers have a little better defense. Defense won the day this day. The Giants used to have a power running attack from 3 RBs, which they nicknamed Earth, Wind, and Fire, anchored by Bradshaw (Earth). They just didn’t have that running attack anymore. They sorely needed it.

Last political blog before the election

The only things I want to say is: VOTE!  I write about the political things that annoy me.  That being said, if you're an American, it is your duty to vote.  If you don't like Obama, vote Romney.  If you don't like Romney, vote Obama.  If you don't like either, find someone that you do, and vote for them.  Just vote!

NFL 12 week 8 synopsis

Well, that was messy. The only reason we kept in the first half was because of Tennessee’s repeated stupid penalties. Hasselback even complained at one point to a ref, saying, “You’ve called that three times!” Then stop doing it.

The Titans were the better team that day. They blocked a FG to close out the half, and threatened to turn it into points.

Let me also say that Titans fans were right. That fumble at the end of regulation was a fumble. Because he went over that player, he didn’t hit the ground. It was a fumble. That being said, they still had the job to stop the Colts. Their defense stopped the Colts all day, but not when it counted. That spiraling, corkscrew TD was amazing. If you didn’t see it, look up the highlight.

Rest of the League:
Falcons-Eagles. Falcons be rolling.

Patriots-Rams. I have an idea. How about we leave the Chump in London? We’ll rename them the England Patriots. Europe can keep them.

Steelers-Redskins. This was not the game everyone was hoping for to say the least. We hoped RGIII would pull out a great game against the Pittsburgh Bumblebees. Maybe Pitt had a chip on their shoulders because of the ugly uniforms.

Lions-Seahawks. This shootout was what we wanted the Steelers game to be.

Browns-Chargers. Another boring game for the Browns, but a big win.

Bears-Panthers. It’s amazing that the Bears can play this badly (especially allowing 6 sacks) and still win. Are they that bad or that good?

Giants-Cowboys. Do you bELIeve in Eli yet? Just don’t believe in Romo. The Giants even took part of the game off to make it a game, and the Cowboys still couldn’t finish it.

NFL 12 Week 7 synopsis

Yay. Colts win. But the game was boring. Nothing happened the entire second half.

The most notable thing in the game was that the Browns missed a PAT. Nine times out of ten, the team that does that looses. And loose they did.

Rest of the League:
Patriots-Jets. The Jets needed them some Tebow Time magic. Once again, Tom “the chump” Brady showed that he can’t win games. That’s what his kicker is for (they haven’ won the big one since trading Vinetari).

Packers-Rams. That’s the Aaron Rodgers we love to see. Now if we could get him off those State Farm commercials.

Texans-Ravens. Wow. The Texans first score was a safety, and then they blew it out after that. I said if the Texans stay hungry, they’ll be nearly unstoppable. They were hungry.

Titans-Bills. Good to see CJ2K running, especially not against the Colts.

Giants-Skins. Do you bELIeve in Eli yet? Skins believe in RGIII, but Eli’s still Eli.

Saints-Buccs. I’m not sure where this Saints team came from, but I just have to say that I love seeing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Creamcicle uniforms. Also, I watch Buccs highlights this season just to see Dallas Clarke.

President Obama and the debate

So, I DVRed the debate, and have not finished watching it yet, but allow me to point a few things out.

The President said low gas prices are a sign of a bad economy.  No wonder he acts so much like Jimmy Carter!  Well, if my being able to afford gas and groceries are the sign of a bad economy, then bring it on!

The president said he's against gender discrimination.  Yet two of his appointed positions were sued for gender discrimination and sexual harassment, with the lawsuits saying that they "ran things like a sorority."  Women are paid 18% less by the Obama administration.  They have disproportionately lost jobs under Obama.  When asked about that, he equated contraception to women's jobs.  Apparently, he views women as wombs for hire.

The president wants to raise taxes to raise revenue, but historically, higher taxes=less revenue and more spending.  So if they raise taxes, they will spend more and take less in.  Why?  Because that means more people out of work, and therefore less overall revenue.  Maybe, instead of looking "forward," he should read a book and look at how things work in the real world.

The President also claimed he cut taxes 18 times.  That's true, if you include cutting taxes on special interest groups and temporary measures which have expired.  He also raised taxes on the middle class through ObamaCare.  He also claimed ObamaCare would lower premiums, but they have raised more than he said they would lower.

Obama also lied about the Arizona law, which the Supreme Court upheld.  They cannot pull someone over because they "look illegal."  If they pull someone over on another violation, they have to present papers.  SO DO I.  I have to present a driver's license.  Don't you?  If they can't produce papers, then an investigation can begin as to whether they were here legally.

Obama also said that he called Libya terrorism.  The Moderator backed him.  Then after the debate, she admitted SHE WAS WRONG.  He said terrorism would not be tolerated, but never said Libya was terrorism.  Too bad to Obama-supporting moderator didn't fact check before putting in her two cents.  Admitting fault later does little to undo the damage.

Lastly, Obama kept saying "That's not true.  That's not true."  They say that if you repeat a lie often enough, loud enough, it will be accepted as truth.  He's trying to paint Romney as a liar, but as Romney said in the first debate, "As president, you're entitled to your own house and your own plane, not your own facts."  Obama's record doesn't match his rhetoric.

Einstein once said "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result."  So do you really think four more years will yield a different result?

NFL 12 weeks 6 synopsis

Well that sucked. Last week, the Colts were ChuckStrong. This week, they looked tired. I think last week was too emotional, and this week they weren’t recovered. The defense started by looking exhausted, and only looked worse as they went. Robert Mathis was out and Freeney was gimped, and that was all they did. They did nothing to stop Greene, who ran all over the defense.

Luck looked like an average rookie, making sore mistakes. The Jets work to have a tough defense, and were firing on all cylinders. The receivers missed opportunities and dropped balls. The running game was non-existent. Again, Reggie Wayne can’t do it alone. Gotta get him some help.

Rest of the League:
Falcons-Raiders. Hotlanta be rolling. They’re quietly 6-0, and perhaps the best team in the NFL right now.

Browns-Bengals. What a way to get a first win. The Browns came out to play in the battle for Ohio, and won decisively.

Ravens-Cowboys. This was a back and forth game, but the bottom line is at the end of the game, Romo and the Cowboys can’t find a way to win. They were so close. They got the onside kick, a rarity in the NFL. But then they miss the FG. They just can’t do it.

Titans-Steelers. OK, I didn’t see this game, but how do the Steelers lose to a team as bad as the Titans have been? Someone answer me that.

Lions-Eagles. Speaking of losing to bad teams… Yes.

Redskins-Vikings. Yeah, RGIII is feeling better.

Seahawks-Patriots. YEAH BABY!!! Apparently the Pansies, I mean Patriots, can’t beat birds this season. By the way, is The Chump (aka Tom Brady) going to blame the replacement refs for this loss? Yeah Hawks!

Giants-Niners. Do you bELIeve in Eli?

Joe Biden's debate performance

There's an old saying.  "Never smile when you lie."  Smiling is a dead give away.  Joe laughed and heckled, interrupted and mocked.  He even got in the face of the moderator, who is a friend of President Obama.  (she did her best to remain neutral, but did not always succeed).

As he always does, Joe Biden made himself look like a fool.  I just still wish that President Obama would pick a VP and not a court Jester.

NFL 12 week 5 synopsis

First thing I have to mention is that with a Packer visit, this was Jeff Saturday’s homecoming to Indy. I have nothing but respect for him as a football player, but moreover as an outspoken Christian man. He is a humble, respectful person, which is a rarity in professional sports.

The second thing to mention is that the Colt’s head coach, Chuck Pagano (I said I would learn his name when he earned it. The devotion of the team earned my respect), was diagnosed with Leukemia. I have respect for the Colt’s and Packers for taking time to recognize and pray for he and his family.

The game (and score) changed after trading punts when the Colt’s went for it in midfield on fourth down. They failed (though the Packer’s weren’t called for lining up offsides, but the did get a stop). The Pack walked it down and hammered it in. Then they did it again.

I gotta ask, why is challenging a play that you can’t challenge “unsportsmanlike conduct”? That’s an overreaction. Make it 5 yards, not fifteen.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. We have to get Reggie Wayne some help. He had a great one-hander that gave us a spark and finally points (a FG), which would have been a TD if not for more uncalled pass interference (we’ve got to stop playing the refs too). Luck’s enjoying throwing to him, but we have to get him some help. Like a running game. Our O-Line got no push, and Brown, who’s not exactly a great Running Back, barely could get back to the line of scrimmage in the first half. The Packer’s defense was tough, but we looked pathetic that first half.

In the second half, that spark from Wayne ignited a fire in the Colts. We’ve had trouble the last few weeks with getting a lead and taking their collective foot off the gas. This week, it was the Packers who allowed the comeback in the third quarter, helped by a rapid series of injuries.

Also, one more honorable mention. It is nice to have Dwight Freeney back. The Colt’s Defense just goes to another level, plays with more heart, when he’s on the field. Even the threat of him sent Rogers into the arms of other players. And boy did they come. And come. And that was the biggest difference in the second half that determined why the Colts played so much better.

Rest of the League:
Falcons-Redskins. The Redskins have to be proud. They came close to knocking off the undefeated. And they looked good doing it. Who knows? If RGIII wouldn’t have been knocked out, they might have won this.

Giants-Browns. So this one wasn’t “crushingly close.” They started out scoring 17, surpising even them. Then Eli decided that was enough and went to work. That’s why we bELIeve in Eli.

Ravens-Chiefs. BORING. The total scoring was 5 FGs between two teams. I like defense, but I’m disappointed in Baltimore.

Patriots-Broncos. It doesn’t matter which pony he plays for. Peyton Manning cannot win in New England. Oh, and Tom Brady is still a chump, and so is Belichump.

That's all I got time for this week.

New Shows

Hey guys, I just wanted to review a couple of the new shows on this season really fast.  They are in no particular order.

Revolution.  NBC Monday nights 10PM Eastern.  This show is really interesting (which you'd expect from Jon Favreau and J.J. Abrams).  The basic premise is that the power went out, worldwide.  They don't know why, and they can't get it back on.  One man might know, but he gets shot and his son kidnapped by the evil Militia, which took over after the collapse.  The guy's daughter is the main character, Charlie.  Charlie goes and finds her Uncle Miles and sets out to rescue her brother Danny from the bad guys.  Very worth a look.

Vegas.  CBS Tuesday nights 10PM Eastern.  Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis.  Need I say more?  Yes?  Ok, but that should be enough.  It's supposed to be the real story of Vegas, controlled by the Mob in the 60s.  It's just interesting.  Plus, no one can scowl like Dennis Quaid.

Last Resort.  ABC Thursday nights 8PM Eastern.  Starring Andre Braugher (a good pick for this intense of a show) and Scott Speedman.  This is about the crew of a submarine who received what may have been falsified orders to start a nuclear war.  When they try to confirm the orders, they are attacked by their own sub.  So, they take their nukes, grab a small island, and set up their own country.  The show seems ok (though I did not appreciate them introducing a character by having her strip and jump in bed).  However, it's trying to compete with Big Bang for ratings, so I'm guessing it won't last the season.

Elementary.  CBS Thursday nights 10PM Eatern.  This one... it's hard to say.  I might need to see more to determine if I like it.  It needs to do something to define itself as not just another show like Monk, the Mentalist, Psych, Perception, and other crime dramas that have that one really smart guy that figures everything out by himself.  I'll wait to see if it holds my attention.

NFL 12 Week 4 synopsis

Colts had a bye. I hate early byes. It kinda defeats the purpose.

Rest of the league:
Falcons-Panthers. This was a great game. For one, I think the Falcons showed that they are for real. The Panthers played great. This was a hard pushing game, and the Falcons showed they can win this kind of physical game.

Niners-Jets. As good as the Falcons and Panthers game was, that’s how bad the Jets were.

Pats-Bills. The Bills were in this (largely due to turnovers), until the fourth quarter (when they started making the turnovers). But you have to play four quarters against the Pats. That said, Tom Brady is a chump, and so is Belichump. It is bad sportsmanship to run up the score in order to embarrass another team.

Rams-Seahawks. No luck for the Hawks this week. That said, this game was legit, amazingly enough. It was quite the division game. Plus, Jeff Fisher did all sorts of trick plays with the Titans against the Colts, so it was nice to see that he hasn’t changed. Gotta love a fake field goal for the TD. I only see that in Madden.

Texans-Titans. The Texans are hungry, and if they keep hungry, I think they’ll keep rolling everyone.

Broncos-Raiders. Yeah. He’s still Peyton Manning.

Packers-Saints. The Saints actually played well! Who knew that they had it in them? Ok, they still made mistakes that cost them the game, but it was better than last week. And for the record, if you’re going to poke a QB in the eye to take them out of the game, make it a chump.

Redskins-Buccs. In recent years, this would be two teams no one cared about, but this year both are trying to make some traction. This game was good as could be hoped for. The Buccs were moving on the end, but RGIII lived up to the hype for once and brought them back to field goal range.

Cards-Fins. Cards are 4-0. Who’d a thunk? They need some better defense, as one Dolphin had 253 receiving yards. Bet you wish you had him on your fantasy team?

The replacement refs

So there's been more exposed that shines light on the replacement refs.  Fox News aired a story this morning that exposed that some of these Refs were fired from the Lingere Football League, because they failed to call things like helmet-to-helmet hits and pass intereference that is some of the same calls they are not making in the NFL.  That's a problem.  But, as always, social media can add levity to any situation.

NFL synopsis week 3 Monday Night Special

Per request, here is my thoughts on the controversy Monday Night.

1) Did the refs make a bad call?  The rule is that a tie goes to the offense.  Some argue that Jennings had it first and the Seahawks wrestled it away.  As the rule is worded, they may have made the right call.  Yeah, it looked like an interception, but they followed the letter of the law to the best of their understanding.

2) Jennings was stupid.  You don't go for the INT with 0:00 left in the game.  You knock it down!  Duh!

3) A lot of teams get screwed.  My Colts got screwed.  It happens.  Man up and get over it.

4) YOU ARE THE STINKING PACKERS.  They are the Seattle Seahawks.  You never should have let this game get that close.  If you don't like it, you should have blown them out.  Maybe you should help Rogers get rid of the football instead of taking sacks like I take breaths.  They looked like they played the game half way.  Next time, don't let the game be that close, and you won't lose.

Too busy?

Our President is busy.  You'd expect that.  He's the president.  The middle east is burning.  Iran is pursuing nukes.  Our education system declines while teacher salaries go up.  The cost of health care is skyrocketing.  Unemployment is high.  Gas and grocery prices have doubled in the last four years.

His solution to these crises?  The View.  That's right.  He doesn't have time to meet with the Prime Ministers of England or Israel, but he has time for Whoopi.  He can't take time to confront the leaders or Egypt or Pakistan.  But he has time for Letterman.  He doesn't have time to discuss the investigation with leaders of Libya.  But he has time for a fundraiser with Beyonce.

I can understand that we are less that less than fifty days to the election, and campaigning is important.  The problem is that this is ALL that he has done in his first term.  Our president is as charismatic as anyone.  But I've come to realize that he believes that he is so likable, everything should go well for him.  He thought the problem with the Middle east is that people hated Bush, but that they would love him.  Turns out that there really are evil people in the world.  He thought that if he said things were better, "consumer confidence" would go up and the economy would turn around, just because people liked him enough to do what he said.

This is why he's been giving nicknames like "Campaigner in Chief" and "Celebrity in Chief."  It's not that people don't like him.  It's that it's not enough.  That's why he hasn't shared any ideas, except raising taxes.  It's not that he's not likable.  It's that he doesn't have any good ideas.

Mr. President, if you want another four years, don't try to get people to like you.  We do.  But it's hard to reelect someone to a job that they didn't do to begin with.

NFL 12 Week 3 synopsis

This game was a tale of two halves. The first half was all Colts, but in the second half they had a comfortable lead. They took their foot off the gas (which almost cost them the game last week too). In the second half, the Jags poured it on. Unfortunately, the replacement refs did too. They decided to only call penalties against the Colts in the second half. They held, interfered on offense and defense, they pushed and pulled and the refs called penalties on the Colts. They also ignored interference that cost us a drive-saving big play that could have won us the game. Who knows what would have happened if the refs called the game fair.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m also mad at a few Colts players, like Vinetari who doesn’t seem to try unless the game is on the line. And the safeties kept choking up and allowed the Jags a few TDs because they weren’t were they should be to stop them.

And Coach What’s-yer-face (you still have to earn the right for me to bother learning your name), do me a favor. Keep your calling aggressive and stop this “run out the clock during the entire second half” crap. Try to win, not stall.

Rest of the League:
Bills-Browns. You know how I point out that the Browns lose crushingly close games? This one wasn’t close.

Bengals-Redskins. Dang. Bengals looked good. I hope RGIII will calm his cocky butt down now.

Vikings-Niners. That was not the same Vikings team we played. Last week, they beat them. This week, they beat a promising San Fran team.

Titans-Lions. Sometimes, two mediocre teams can have a great game together. In this case, it was a shootout.

Cowboys-Buccs. This was a “Which team can suck worse?” type of game. I’ll also say that the Buccs are proving to be sore losers, but it looks like they’ll have lots of practice at losing.

Chiefs-Saints. Man the Saints are bad.

Jets-Fins. It’s TEBOW TIME. Yeah, that’s right. He had a zero yard carry out of something like a Wild Cat formation. I think they want to lull teams into thinking he’s going to run, then let him rip one later. Also got to say, icing the kicker NEVER EVER WORKS.

Raiders-Steelers. If you’re going to get your first win week three, this is how you should do it. These are two teams with histories. They have histories of producing teams that knock the slobber out of others. So they knocked the slobber out of each other. In the end, Oakland knocked harder. Regardless of outcome, this was a great game. Regarding outcome, it was even better.

Texans-Broncos. Gotta say, I was rooting for the Colt’s division rival in this one. And they put it to Peyton.

Ravens-Patriots. Revenge can be oh so sweet sometimes. Hats off to Corey Smith, who learned that his 19 year old brother was killed in a motorcycle accident, but decided to play anyway. So he went and had the best game of his career. That said, do you know why Tom Brady is such a chump? Well, he’s an arrogant piece of crap, and a self-righteous bully. He’s always been that way. But maybe the pretty boy never grew into a man because his coach is an arrogant piece of crap and a self-righteous bully too. I don’t care what you don’t like; you should NEVER place your hands on a ref. You lost. It’s in the books. If you don’t like it, play harder next time.

PC stupidity

The ACLU threatened to sue Rhode Island schools on behalf of a mother.  Why?  What had they done?  Had they supressed free speech?  No.  Religion?  Nuh-uh.

They had annual dances.

OH NO!  That's terrible!

That's right, they were suing over the annual father-daughter and mother-son dances.  The schools, fearful of the lawsuit, cancelled the traditional dance.

The ACLU claims that it is disciminatory.  The mother is a single mom, and her daughter has no one to take her.

By that logic, we should outlaw marriage, because I am single.  We should outlaw sex, because I'm a virgin.  We should outlaw the NBA, because I suck at basketball.  We should outlaw skinny people, because I am fat.

This selfish stupidity is gonig way out of hand.  "It makes me sad because my daughter doesn't have a dad.  Therefore I'm going to make everyone ELSE miserable."  This is stupid.  And shame on RI for not fighting it.  And shame on the ACLU for supporting it.  How is this liberty?  Or did you forget what the "L" stands for?  This isn't Sharia Law.  No one is threatening the girl with harm.  An uncle, or trustworthy friend could take her.  Heck, she could go with one of her friend's dads, just to be able to dress up and go.

Across the world, people are burned alive for their religous belief or their ethnicity.  Women are raped and murdered because they are seen as objects instead of people.  Maybe we should be more worried about that than dances and free birth control.

Maybe, just maybe, all these idiots should spend a year overseas serving people who have real troubles.  Then maybe they would stop being so self-centered and start caring about things that really matter.

NFL 12 week 2 synopsis

Well, last week I said that the Colts needed to get some help out there for Reggie Wayne. This week, Luck found Donnie Avery. The O-Line found much more of a rhythm, so Luck was able to have some time to stand and deliver a pass. Reggie still showed himself to be the man on that catch before halftime.

Our defense also started to look more like a unit, but I’d have felt better with a healthy Freeney. That said, it felt good to be able to stall AP as well as we did, even if Percy Harvin was still a beast.

The Colts still had plenty of struggles. Donald Brown proved adequate last year, but he’s not making it past the line of scrimmage on most plays. We need a fullback. We also had some help by just stupid penalties by Minnesota. But we cannot assume that the other team will hand the game to us.

Rest of the League:
Cards-Pats. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!! Arizona isn’t exactly considered one of the NFL’s power teams, but man did they put it to the Pats in New England. Which I love to see, because Brady is a chump.

Panthers-Saints. Ok, yes, the Panthers showed a lot of potential this year, but man the Saints were bad. I mean, they seem to go through cycles and it’s their turn to be bad, but still.

Texans-Jags. Houston is gunning for another playoff appearance, but is it any wonder that I called that Indy would beat Jacksonville twice?

Fins-Raiders. Miami eventually overtook Oakland in the second half, but this game was back and forth the first half. Who would have guessed that two teams that bad would have made for a game that was this good?

Bengals-Browns. Yet another crushing, close loss for Cleveland, but that’s what they do.

Giants-Buccs. I bELIeve in Eli. The Buccs got off to a big lead, but we all know the Giants don’t even try unless they’re behind in the fourth.  Coughlin was right, by the way.  Don't lay a hand on my boy Eli.

Eagles-Ravens. Wow. Just wow. The Birdy Bowl was one heck of a game. The Eagles really didn’t deserve to win, but they pulled it out. That’s the way it goes sometimes.

Steelers-Jets.  It's TEBOW TIME!  That's right, Tebow had playing time.  He did a QB draw for a 22 yard gain.  Still, it's Tebow.   Seahawks-Cowboys.  All that proves is last week is a fluke and Romo is a big girl.   Rams-Redskins.  This game was old school.  By that, I mean they let the teams get away with a lot of cheap shots, illegal contact, and roughing the passer.  These are the things that make Unitas so great.  He played in a day when all that and more was legal.  Point is, I can understand Josh Morgan's frustration.  But in one selfish act, he put himself and his temper before the team.  You cannot do that.  Ever.  He needs to learn for Eli Manning and let his coach settle it.

Dems and Israel

So... the Dems say that their strong supporters on Israel.  You kidding me?  They took God and support for Israel out of the DNC platform.  This caused a massive firestorm, so Obama ordered them to put it back in.

This was the result.

Are you serious?  They just booed God and our closest ally.  Yeah, that's real support from a party whose leader, the president, went on an apology tour through the middle east, and has done very little to support Israel.  Then again, he's done very little to support anything outside of his campaign and the local country club.  But that's not the point.

While claiming solidarity with Israel, he subs a visit, right now, from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. We are being attacked by the Arab world. Iran is building nukes in order to start a war. Israel is trying to keep those nukes from being dropped on their heads and ours. But President Obama is to busy hobnobbing with the "millionaires and billionaires" that he constantly rails against to meet with our most important ally or even attend briefings by the defense department (he's attended less than half this year. Look it up.)

Yeah, I'm sure Israel takes being snubbed as real support. Give me a break.

Embassy attacks

Mad yet?  You should be.  An embassy of any country counts as that countries sovereign territory.  So attacking a US embassy is the same as attacking the white house.  And worse, the first attacks were coordinated to take place on 9-11.

There are several points to be made here.  First of all, a leaked statement came out after the attack in Cairo, apologizing for being there.  And while Obama has rightfully distanced himself from this idiocy, even if it was not his words, it IS his philosophy.  One of the first things he did was to go to Cairo and apologize for the war on terror.  We were ATTACKED.  We have been attacked now.  Apologizing for being attacked is the same as desecrating our own dead.

Second, I would like to point out that the attacks in Egypt and Libya come after we helped to dispose two men who were considered our allies.  Now let me be clear, by targeting civilians, both men showed a great evil.  If I were in Obama's shoes, I probably would have made similar calls in both cases.  However, this is a case of out of the frying pan, into the fire.  Mubarak and Qaddafi were both considered allies, barely, but they did keep the Muslim Brotherhood in check.  There is a saying, "Better the devil you know than the one you don't."  In this case, we replace the devils we knew with terrorists.

Third, I hate political responses.  "We condemn these attacks in the strongest terms."  No, you don't.  That is in effect saying "We thought long and hard about it and decided murder is bad."  That's stupid.  You should order Marines to guard embassies and our American flag with sniper rifles and machine guns.  The crowd gets out of line, you carefully select a few of the worst behaving and put them down like a rabid dog.  Maybe without instigators, the crowd will disperse.

Fourth, and this is a question, why did we support the "Arab spring" against our allies, but not in Syria and Iran where it might actually do some good by overthrowing those who seek to kill us and our friend Israel, and have the means to do so?  Answer me that.  (further discussion coming later on this).

Fifth, Mitt Romney's response was dumb.  Even if what he said was correct, it was not appropriate.  Yes, the white house perhaps should have condemned the attacks BEFORE Mitt told them to do so, but still, you don't criticize the president while the attacks are happening.  He should have waited (not that the other side of the aisle did against Bush, but their misbehavior does not excuse his).

Sixth, shame on the morons who blame us for getting attacked.  They did the same after 9-11.  "We provoked it."  Yes, we totally provoked 9-11 because the towers didn't fall when they were attacked in 1993.  That's entirely our fault for not rolling over and dying right then.  The Quran says to kill.  This is a violent religion.  If you say that those who do these attacks pervert a peaceful religion, you are ignorant.  Read the thing for yourself.  And read history, about Mohammed's attacks on others.  It was violent before it was peacefully.  This is a religion that teaches murder and terrorism.  They are taught to kill and enslave anyone who disagrees with them.  They will never be appeased.  If we were no longer a world superpower, they would still try to kill us because that is all they know.  It is not our fault, as evidence by the fact that they also kill each other.  It is simply their paradigm.  So all these people that call themselves "elite" and teach that we are the cause of people hating us are just plain STUPID.

My 9-11 story

Eleven years ago, the bell rang at 10:05 to let me out of Algebra 2. There to greet me was a friend of mine. He told me terrorists had hijacked a bunch of planes, and had already rammed two into the World Trade Center. I told him, "Somebody is messing with you. No one is dumb enough to attack the United States of America." I walked into US History next, as saw one smoking tower on TV (the other had fallen). When the bell rang to start History Class, Mr. Eckart got up in front of the class and said "This is History." We spent the rest of class in silence listening to Peter Jennings.

Never forget.

NFL 12 Week 1 synopsis

Well, the Colt’s season started well. By that, I mean that Robert Mathis started by sacking Jay Culter for a twelve yard loss. Then on the next series, Cutler through a pick 6 to Freeman. Man, Colt’s defense is fun to watch. Offense is mental; defense was emotional. And the Colt’s D was fired up and unleashed (at least until Freeney sprained his ankle).

The Beats finally started to perform well when they stopped relying on Culter’s arm and started using Forte’s feet. Once they did so, the offense was able to settle down and start to play their game.

Chicago also did well on defense. They were able to get lots of pressure in the Colt’s backfield. (Hey Irsay, you miss Saturday yet? Never should have let the best Center in the NFL go.)

The Colt’s offense struggled to get going. Let’s just say their only offensive player was Reggie Wayne (one of two offensive players, the other being Saturday, who started every game this season). Eventually Donald Brown got into it, scoring a TD to atone for an earlier dropped easy pass. Too bad he did it again. Brown is better than Carter was, but we need a new running back. And we have to get Reggie Wayne some help out there. Fleener has potential, but a lot of people have potential and don’t make it.

The Colt’s bright spot might have been their traditional Achilles’ heal. By that, I mean their special teams, led by Joe Lefegge (sp?). Well, it was in the first half. Then right when they needed a big play to stay in the game, they coughed it up. That was pretty well game over. Still, it’s sad when about the best thing you can say about a team is “well, as least our special teams gave them bad field position.”

Skins-Saints. RG3 started with a TD to former Colt Pierre Garcon. Skins are taking advantage of a receiver that the Colts developed and Irsay traded just as he was coming into his own. (Irsay, miss Garcon yet?)

Lions-Rams. Two young QBs I like and respect, Stafford and Bradford. One heck of a game.

Eagles-Browns. Another season, same story. Another crushingly close loss by the Browns. Both teams had just way too many turnovers. Wait, doesn’t if violate Vick’s parole to go to the dog pound?

Jets-Bills. The Sanchize didn’t need no Tebow Time.

Niners-Packers. Um… not the outcome I expected. I just cannot explain where this came from. But that’s the fun of a new season.

Patriots-Titans. Brady is a chump (tell me you missed it.)

Broncos-Steelers. PEYTON MANNING. Nuff said? No? Welcome back Peyton. Too bad you’re playing for the wrong horse. I loved the pregame interview of Manning by Coach Dungy. Too bad my satellite service went down and I didn’t see any more anything for a while (and people wonder why I hate technology).  I did get it back in time to see Manning's 400th career pass.  And Rothisberger?  Still the most overrated QB in the NFL, except maybe Brady.

DNC opening

The DNC opened with a historic occassion.  The national debt rolled over $16,000,000,000,000.  That's a lot of zeros.  This is from a man who once promised to cut the deficit in half, or said that we shouldn't re-elect him.  This is from a man who said adding half the amount that he has added in three years, over an eight year period, was irresponsible and unpatriotic.

I do have to pause for a moment and defend an unfair attack on the President, however.  When asked to grade himself, he said "incomplete."  Conservatives jumped on this, as an incomplete grade in school is terrible.  But what should he say?  "A.  I've done everything that I know how to do, so elect the other guy."  Or should he say "F.  I'm a complete failure, so elect the other guy."  Incomplete is the best answer to a bad question.  It says, "I have more that I want to do, so give me another shot."  It's the best answer.  It's the question that's bad.

Now with that out of the way, let me continue.  The first theme of the DNC is "We belong to the government."  I think that this is supposed to be a loose JFK reference, but instead of doing "for your country" this is doing "for the government."  I'm sorry, but we are supposed to be "by the people for the people," not "by the government for the government."  We don't belong to the government.  Unique among all the peoples of the earth, WE THE PEOPLE govern.  Government is a necessary evil, not a good.  In Deuteronomy, government is a curse, a sign of disobedience from God.  I'm not saying anarchy is better.  I'm saying that if people had true integrity, government would be obsolete.

I should also point out that the Democratic platform unveiled at the DNC shows Obama's true view of Israel, by withdrawing support of them.  Obama has isolated us from Israel, believing that a middle-of-the-raod position might help with negotiations with Iran in others, perhaps removing bias?  I don't know.  What I do know is Rosevelt said "Speak softly and carry a big stick."  But they believe that speaking softly requires reducing the size of the stick.  (Though according to Biden, Obama has a "big stick."  Think of that as you try to go to sleep tonight.)

Something that I've learned, though it sounds cliche, is true.  Obama believes that the greatness of America is something that we should apologize for (because he believes that Robin Hood is the ultimate sign of goodness, specifically the taking from the haves).  What I, and many others like me believe is that the greatness of America is something that we should STRIVE for.  This is us, as a nation, having, so that instead of others taking, we can give, to ensure that what we give is used wisely.

Obama and Biden want to say that they care?  They care about taking from you to give to those that they supposedly care about.  But neither gives significantly to charity.  I give a little over twelve percent of my income to charity, giving my support to where is does good, not where is will get me votes.  If they truly believed what they preach, they would show it with their checkbooks.

Vow of the Modern Knight

The Knight

We live in a day when we are in need of knights. We need warriors who are willing to fight for things that truly matter. As a knight for today, I take this oath.

A knight does not serve himself. He serves a king. I surrender myself totally to the King of Kings. I will obey him in every area of my life. I withhold nothing from myself. I completely and totally surrender. I will obey His every command. I will go on every quest, no matter how dangerous, no matter how deadly, no matter the cost to myself.
Isaiah 6:8, Luke 9:23, 12:51, Romans 6:22-23, 12:1, Rev 19:11-16

A knight is a warrior. We live in a world at war. I pledge to fight. I pledge to defend myself from the attacks of Satan, using the armor God has given me. I will use the weapons God has given me, the sword of His Word and prayer. I will not fight alone, but with my King. I was not meant to fight alone, but alongside my fellow knights. I will lead when others will only follow. I will not get caught alone and be an easy target for the Enemy and his minions. I will fight alongside others. I will defend those who cannot defend themselves. I will join the King on His mission to storm the gates of Hell itself and set free those held captive there. I understand that this is a dangerous mission and that many have fallen in the undertaking of it. That is why I will surround myself with prayer, with the armor of the King, and with knights who do the same.
Exodus 15:3, Ephesians 6:10-18, Romans 8:37-39, Rev. 20:10

The Virtues of the Knight

The first virtue of the knight is integrity. Someone once said, “Integrity is doing the right thing when no one is looking.” I will strive to be a man of integrity. I will be the same man whether I am being watched or not. Whether I am with my family, with my church, with my friends, or with myself, I will do the right thing. I will live my life built on a foundation of the King of Kings and His Word. I vow have integrity in every area of my life. I will obey the King in every area of my life. No area will be off limits to Him. I will have integrity in even the small things. No exceptions, just obedience.
Matthew 7:24-27, Psalm 24:3-5, Psalm 25:21, 41:12, Proverbs 10:9, Titus 2:7-8

A knight will be a man of courage. I will not let fear hold me. I refuse to be imprisoned by its power. Fear is a great weapon of the Enemy. I will not stay a hostage of my fear. The Enemy cannot stand with the power of the King. The servants of the King are far stronger than the minions of the Enemy. The Enemy is already defeated. His tactics are of the weak and desperate. I will not let my fear control me. There is no bravery without fear. I refuse to surrender. I refuse to die. I will be a man of courage.
Proverbs 28:1, Hebrews 13:6, 2 Timothy 1:7, 1 Corinthians 16:13, Matthew 14:27, 2 Kings 6:16

I will be a knight of compassion. I will seek to truly help the poor, not just give a token dollar to appease guilt. I will fight for justice for those who are oppressed. I will strive for freedom for slaves. I will try to provide food for the hungry, drink for the thirsty. And I will treat those that I meet daily with compassion.
Luke 4:18-19, Isaiah 58:6, Matthew 25:31-46, 1 John 3:17-18, James 1:27

As a knight, I will strive for self-control. I will discipline my body, my mind, and my heart. Satan will try to take me out of the fight through self-indulgence. I will fight him through self-discipline. I will read and memorize Scripture. I will read devotional books and books to help me lead others. I will keep my guard up. I will flee temptation. I will control my body and my weight. I vow to discipline myself.
1 Timothy 4:8, Galatians 5:22-23, 2 Peter 1:5-8, Hebrews 12:11, 1 Corinthians 9:24-27
A knight will speak with honesty. I will not tell a lie, no matter how small it seems. My world will be my bond. I will keep the commitments that I make to the best of my ability. I will in no way deceive anyone for any reason. My “yes” will mean yes and my “no” no. My word will be trustworthy.
Ephesians 4:15,25, Ephesians 6:14, Matthew 5:33-37

As a knight, I will strive for humility. I will remember that I am only a servant of the King. I will think more of others than I do myself. I will give glory to Jesus in all things. Max Lucado wrote, “Humility is not thinking less of yourself. It is thinking of yourself less.”
Matthew 20:25-28, Philippians 2:3, Colossians 3:12, James 3:13, 1Peter 5:5, Psalm 8:3-4,
Proverbs 16:18

As a knight, I will live with purity. I will keep my mind and body pure. I will not allow myself to be diluted by the lusts and desires of the world. Many things in this world are intended to corrupt man and take away the pureness of his heart, mind, and soul but I will fight against these things to keep my purity. I will keep my eyes clean. I will keep my mind pure by memorizing the Word. I will also be pure in my devotion to the One and Only King in Heaven. No other idols will take me captive or break my whole devotion to the King of Kings.
1 Corinthians 6:18-20, Psalm 119:9, 1 Timothy 4:12, Mark 7:21-23, Matthew 5:48

Another virtue of the knight is perseverance. This world has many hardships. I will joyfully endure them, seeking only to be transformed more into the likeness of the King. No matter the trail, I will seek only to be obedient and to become the man I was meant to be. No matter the battle, I will continue to fight. I will endure and help others to endure. I will seek out relationships that will help me keep to the path.
James 1:2-4, James 1:12, 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, Hebrews 12:1, Romans 5:1-5, Matthew 7:24-27

A knight will strive for patience. A knight will show understanding. I will let mistakes go, since I have made my share. I will try to empathize with others, especially in their anger, to see things from their perspective and attempt to root out the deeper issues, knowing that sometimes people just need an ear to listen.
Proverbs 16:32, Ephesians 4:2, Galatians 5:22-23, James 1:19

Another virtue of the knight is loyalty. I swear allegiance to the King. I will let nothing stand between Him and me. I will loyally defend my brothers and sisters in Christ through accountability, transparency, and prayer.
1 Samuel 20:42, Hosea 6:6 (NASB), 1 Chronicles 29:18
A knight will work with excellence. In all things, I will work to please the king, and therefore do my best. Hard work is also a virtue of the knight. I will not flinch. I will not hesitate. I will not leave it for others. I will do the work that needs done. I will be a servant for all. I will work not to earn the love of my King, since I cannot do so, but I will work as my act of gratitude for what the king has done for me.
Ephesians 2:10, Ephesians 6:7-8, Matthew 25:14-46, Luke 17:7-10, Revelation 2:2

Relationships of the Knight

The King. I will obey the king in all areas of my life. And I will love the king with everything that I am and everything that I do. I will study His Word and apply it to my life. I will seek daily to build a closer walk with Him.
Deuteronomy 6:4-5

The lady. I will treat women with respect, as daughters of the King. I will only seek deeper relationships with those that will help me grow closer to the King. I will seek to do the same for her. I will put her above myself and my work, understanding that the first person I should serve is her. And I will love her with self-sacrifice and undying commitment despite wavering emotions or what I get out of it. I seek not a servant nor a princess, but a partner.
Ephesians 5:25-33

Children. I will disciple my own kids. I will make it my first priority to help them to be loyal to the King. The best way to love them is to love their mother. I will help sons to see their strength and to become warriors. I will help daughters to see their beauty and their value.
Ephesians 6:4
Church. I will lead the church by being a servant. I will stand as a shepherd to guide, and a watchman to protect. It is not my church, but the King’s. I understand that I cannot lead from above; I must be with them. I will feed them. I will make disciples. I will seek others with whom I can walk through life. And I will train up other leaders to serve the King and His church.
Jeremiah 23:1-2, Ezekiel 3:17-19,
The lost. I will follow the King in His mission to seek and save the lost, by whatever means necessary. I will remember that I am not superior to them, but “a fellow beggar showing others where to find bread.”
Matthew 28:18-20, Acts1:8

The World. I will not be swayed, deterred, or distracted by the world and following the crowd. No matter how unpopular, I will obey the King as He leads me. I will not seek the world’s interests or possessions.
Exodus 23:2a, Galatians 1:10, 1 John 2:15-17

The Enemy. I will fight the enemy until all my strength is spent, and then I will rely on the strength of the King. I will seek to storm his strongholds and set free his captives. I know that he has lost the war. I will still fight the battles.
Ephesians 6:10-12, Revelation 20:10

Himself. I will feed myself through His Word. I will keep my armor strong and my sword sharp. I will keep my vows on the above virtues. I understand that I cannot help others if I have not taken care of myself.
Psalm 119

In adding my name in comment, I take this vow.

Stupid

Republican Todd Akin, who is competing in Missouri's Senatorial race, must be so stupid, I'm amazed that he never choked to death on his own tongue.  He's so dumb, he's practically Joe Biden.

He said that abortion for rape should not be a consideration, because any woman who was a victim of "legitimate rape" could not get pregnant.  Apparently, his parents never told him about the birds and the bees.  Either that, or he endured some type of head trauma that caused him to have a total lobotomy.

Mr. Akin, I assume you've never met a rape victim.  I have.  I've done counseling to rape victims.  So please, stop making wild conjectures and theories and speaking about things you are more than ignorant on.  Also, who ever spends time reminding this idiot to breathe, stop it.

Mr. Akin, I almost wish I lived in the "show me" state just so that I could not vote for you.

Who's the Hater?

So people keep calling Bible-believing Christians haters.  They say we hate people not like us.  Let me make a few clarifications.

1) Westboro Baptist Church do not count as Bible-believing.  In fact, Peter warned about them in the Bible.  2 Peter 3:15-16 (NIV) "Bear in mind that our Lord's patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. 16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction."  They don't speak for us, because they are "ignorant and unstable."

2) There is an old saying in the Christian Church: "Love the sinner; hate the sin."  If I truly believe the Bible, (that all people are sinners (Romans 3:23), that God loves everyone (John 3:16) and sent his Son Jesus to take the punishment for our sin (Romans 6:23), that we are all equally guilt (James 2:10), and God wants to save everyone (2 Peter 3:9),) then I have a responsibility.  If we all either have to accept God's forgiveness by changing our ways and being obedient to him, or we have to suffer the punishment for our sins.  We are all the same.  One person described the way we Christians should be as "One beggar telling another beggar where to find bread."  Others have described it as throwing a life preserver to a drowning man.  This is our job, to love our fellow sinners enough to storm the very gates of hell itself to tell them of the same chance for rescue that we have.

The reason I point these things out is because I'm sick of being falsely labled.  But I also have something else to ask.

Are WE the ones that hate?

My sister was recently attacked for taking her infant daughter to get lunch and take it to "Dada."  Why was she attacked?  The lunch was chicken.  She was called ever foul thing these people could think of.  They should be embarrassed at their behavior.  And all just because her baby missed her daddy.

But the reason I particularly write this today is because of the news yesterday.  In our nation's capital, a man walked into a Christian organization and opened fire.  Why?  Because of their stance on family values.

A few in the media are defending the man, who is likely to be charged with domestic terrorism.  They're calling this Christian organization a "hate group."

I'm sorry, but who had the gun?  Who was the one trying to kill people?  Why are THEY being accused of hate?  It seems to any reasonable person that the gunman is the hater.

Here's an idea.  Instead of trying to defend his actions to support a political agenda, why not just call him a madman and be done with it.

Sick and Tired

Ok, so I just wrote a post on how I'm sick of racist crap after that skin head shot up the Sikh temple last week, you know?  Well, this morning, I turn on the news to see another racists comment.  From who?  Vice President Joe Biden.  (I still think the worst thing about the President is he seems to surround himself with idiots to make himself look smarter.)

Speaking to a group of African Americans, the Vice President said about Republicans, "They're gonna put y'all back in chains."

ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?

Did Biden just say that Republicans want to make slaves again.  Last time I checked, Abraham Lincoln was A REPUBLICAN.  It was Southern Democrats (known as Dixie-crats) who were pro-slavery.  They started the War of Succession (known as the Civil War) over their desire to keep slaves.

And now, democrats try to make race a divisive issue.  Just look at the way they treat Col. Allen West, calling him a traitor to his race for being a Republican.  I'm sorry, which party is the one saying "You!  You're black.  Get in line and do what we tell you."  THAT sounds more like slavery to me.

So for the record, let me say it again.  I hate racism.  And I hate this racist fear-mongering from pigs like Biden.  But I guess what really upsets me is that this isn't coming from some nameless, faceless journalist or blogger (from either party).  This is coming from someone that we should be able to respect.

So, with all due respect Mr. Vice President. shut your mouth.  And please, Mr. President, PLEASE, find a running mate that isn't a complete moron.

Just a quick prayer

I don't normally do this, but I feel the need to write a quick prayer to God.

Father, thank you for sending the Holy Spirit to dwell in your followers.  Because I rely on His power so much.  I can feel Him working as I write and speak.  So much of the good that I do is because of His power and not my own.  There have been so many times when I was overwhelmed with His presence, because You had something you were wanting to do, and I just happened to be present, little more than a tool in Your hands.  That is such an amazing thing, and something so few people get to be a part of.  I am in awe that you choose to use a nothing like me, so that your power comes through.  I love you.  Nothing in life compares to you.  So thank you.  In the name of your Son Jesus I pray.  Amen.

Racism rant

Sunday, a skin-head Neo-Nazi walked into a Sikh temple and opened fire, killing 6.

This is incomprehensible to me.  Not just the violence, but the hate.  I just wasn't raised like that.  In fact, the only time I ever threatened violence upon another individual was because I heard a friend of mine say the "n" word.

I love the movie Remember the Titans, but in truth that's impossible for me to imagine as well.  I just wasn't raised to notice differences.  My mother told me this past week a story I had not heard.  When my parents married, and later had my sister, they lived on the Wind River Indian Reservation.  Mom told me that sometime after we moved from there, they moved in next door to a black family.  They sent my sister to the yard to play.  They watched her curiously, as she had never seen a black person while on the Indian Reservation.  They wanted to see how she reacted.  All she knew was they had a daughter about her age, so she made a friend.

So many of these differences are imagined.  They are taught to us by others.  I don't know who taught this particular skin-head to hate (though most learn from their parents).  But I never learned that.  In fact, I hate it when people point it out.  When they said on the news that Obama was the first black president, I didn't believe them until I looked it up.  I never noticed.  I never thought about it.  He's the president of the US.  That's an amazing feat.  Why does it matter that he's black?

I thought the same when they said Tony Dungy was the first black head coach to win a Super Bowl (Go Colts!).  It's an amazing feat.  Why does it matter that he's black?  When they asked Dungy about it, I loved his response.  "Lovie (Lovie Smith, coach of the Chicago Bears) and I were talking about that before the game.  We said that that was an amazing thing, but it means so much more to us that we are both Christians who proved that you could win God's way."  He ignored the race issue and chose instead to give glory to God.

I'm tired of all the racist crap.  I'm tired of Neo-Nazis and others who think that everyone should treat anyone different than them badly (look at Rwanda).  I'm also tired of racists pretending to be good people, like the moron on the news a few weeks ago who claimed that Republicans make voter ID laws because they are racist.  His reasoning?  Blacks and Hispanics can't read well enough to get an ID.  I'm sorry, did you just say that other races are too stupid to read?  Then you call the other people racist for reasoning that all men are created equal and not pitying the inferior people?  I hate to tell you, but it's still racism if you believe others are less than you and therefore need your help.

I want to contrast this with another event from Sunday.  Our community put on a "Family Day" at one of the local parks.  It wasn't about race.  It was about people getting together instead of separate.  There was no consideration about the ethnicity of the person in line before you at the concession stand.  It was just about people having a good time.

Why can't we all just get along?  We can.  We do, all the time.  So let's all join together to tell the politicians from both sides of the aisle who get on a power trip from this crap to shut up and leave the rest of us alone.

8-1-12 and the First Amendment. Win, lose, or draw?

Social Media has been active lately, all revolving around chicken.  Well, not really chicken.  About religious beliefs and whether people have a right to them.  If a private citizen was asked about his religion by a religious magazine, can you hold an entire company accountable?

Some organized boycotts.  I'm fine with that.  I've long said that.  If you don't agree with a company, don't go there.  If you don't like how Wal-Mart, for example, does business, don't write your congressman.  Just shop elsewhere.  Because it doesn't matter what you say about a company.  They are going to watch their bottom line.  So I love the fact that people are boycotting.

Others, to show their support, organized a day to do so.  Yesterday, people bought chicken.  We have three Chick-Fil-As locally.  At least one ran out of Waffle fries!  I have friends across the country who reported what theirs looked like.  A friend in Maryland went to one, and had to go to the Wendy's across the street, because they only give him and hour for lunch.  Wendy's, he said, was also slammed because of the overflow.  Someone in Louisville, KY said that local news reports were advising people to detour around every one of them in the city, because they were so packed that cars were blocking traffic in a several block radius of them.

I wanted to see for myself.  I didn't want media bias or others propaganda.  I drove by the least busy of the three in my city.  Cars were wrapped around the block for the drive through.  Those going inside took up the parking lot of the restaurant.  And the McDonalds next door.  And the strip mall behind it.  And that end of the Target Parking lot.  And that end of the parking area of a kids' play place.  I know because I watched people walking to and from their cars.  I know because as I drove around, I looked in the window and saw that many could not even fit inside the fast-food place.  I've never seen so many people in such a small place.  I myself did not go in.  I couldn't have gotten inside.

As you know, I often report on the loss of freedoms, especially First Amendment rights.  This was a day for either side to make themselves heard.

And yet, this was also a day to watch religious freedom vanish.  Under ObamaCare, 8-1 was a day when religious associated charities and medical services are now forced to violate their religious freedom.  Catholics in particular object to birth control in all forms as a religious belief.  Now they are not just forced to distribute, but pay for something that violates their religion.  But this goes beyond just the Catholic Church.  According to the ObamaCare definition of birth control, this includes the so called "Morning After" or "Abortion" pill, RU486.  That's right.  Pro-lifers now have to pay for abortions.

My question is why?  Yesterday, people were allowed to buy or boycott chicken, based on their belief.  But they are forced to purchase and distribute something that destroys a human being.  What's worse, this wasn't covered on the news because of chicken.

So Freedom of Speech and Freedom to Assembly were upheld yesterday.  But Freedom of Religion and the Right to Life were not.  Hm...

So what do you think?  Win?  Lose?  Draw?  I'm a natural pessimist, and I tend to value the unborn over waffle fries, so I'm leaning toward loss.  But please leave a comment letting me know what you think.  Start with any of the three options, then explain why.

On the Subject of Gun Control

Hours after the Colorado "Movie Massacre," New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on the radio that he believe that every police officer in the country should go on strike, and refuse to come back to work until there were stricter gun control laws.

It was not for days AFTER that until investigators discovered that the shooter had purchased the guns legally by spreading purchases across several stores.  He had no prior arrest record, so even with gun control laws, they would not have caught him.

Since this, gun control laws have been debated.  That said, I wanted to explain in a calm, rational matter, what this actually is.

First, let's look at what the Second Amendment actually states.  A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.  What this means is that our founding fathers gave us a unique right, unique to all the world.  They understood that it was only through the ability to defend oneself, it was necessary to have firearms.  In particular, they believed that we the people needed guns to keep the government in check.  So all those who believe that the National Guard remove the need for the second amendment do not understand history.  (Point of fact, in WWII, the Japanese said that they did not invade the American mainland because all they knew about America was from Westerns and Gangster movies.  They would not attack, believing there would be "a gun behind every bush and tree.")

Second, let's look at what happens when this is taken away.  In Atlanta, GA, they passed a law making guns illegal within city limits.  Gun-related crimes, like armed robbery quadrupled.  Why?  Criminals, by definition, ignore the law.  So if they saw no cops in a dinner, they could rob it safely.  When this law was repealed due to these affects, restaurant and store owners put signs in their windows saying things like "10% off if you are carrying a gun."  Crime reached new lows.  When Katrina hit, they declared martial law and went into wealthy neighborhoods and rounded up all the guns from the homeowners.  Looters came unchecked and destroyed these homes because officials were too busy with search and rescue to defend these neighborhoods.  These are true stories.  Look them up.

Fear and emotion tend to overrule logic and fact in our time.  The fact is, places with stricter gun control laws have more gun crimes.  I know it seems counter intuitive, but it's true.  I'll give you another.  Automatic weapons are not more deadly that other firearms (in fact, they're less so.  In Vietnam, those with automatic weapons averaged firing almost 50 shots per kill.  Snipers, using bolt-action rifles averaged 1.3 bullets per kill).  They're just scarier.  In the same way, switch-blades are not deadlier than other knives.  They're just scarier, so they're illegal.

The fact is, what if someone else in that theater had a gun?  They could have put a bullet in the shooter's eye after he started firing.  What if you had no wounded and just the maniac dead?  The person that killed him would be called a hero.  Period.  I read someone saying "He had on body armor, so a regular person shooting him wouldn't have mattered unless they had armor-piercing rounds."  Have you never watched a cop show?  A bullet in a vest is survivable, but mean broken ribs, maybe even a punctured lung.  That takes the fight out of him real fast.  That means an apprehended, live, bad guy.  Even better.

Now I'm not say everyone should have a gun.  I don't have one.  But what I am saying is that we should have ordinary people who are trained to use them.  I learned gun safety in school.  Rule #1: Always treat a gun like it's loaded, even when it's not.  Because it might have a chambered round and you not realize it.  Rule #2: NEVER point a gun at ANYTHING you don't intend to destroy.  Period.  (Again, even if it's not loaded.)  I learned to respect the power of weapons of all types.  So there's no mystery.  There's no curiosity leading to stupidity.  There is only knowledge leading to wisdom.

So what if any of those four military personnel who were wounded had been carrying a gun?  They might have saved a lot of lives.

Maybe what we need is less fearful reaction and more education.
